
7. Seeing Double
Alligators have a unique double eyelid system that allows them to thrive in both water and on land. They possess a nictitating membrane, sometimes called a third eyelid, that acts like a transparent goggle underwater. This special lid protects their eyes from debris and provides clear vision while swimming. When they emerge from the water, the nictitating membrane tucks away, and their regular eyelids take over, allowing them to see clearly in the air. This double eyelid system essentially gives alligators an underwater superpower, letting them switch between perfect vision in two completely different environments.
