13. New York: Sunday Shoe Shining Ban

In New York, it’s illegal to shine shoes after 1 p.m. on a Sunday. That is, unless you’re a “person engaged in or employed by the management of bona fide hotels.” This law, dating back to the early 20th century, is part of New York’s “blue laws,” which prohibited certain activities on specified days, usually Sundays. While the law’s original intent may have been to encourage Sabbath observance, its enforcement today is minimal. So, if you’re in New York and in need of a shoe shine on a Sunday afternoon, make sure to find a hotel employee to do it for you!
