23. South Dakota: Sylvan Lake Beach
Tucked high into the Black Hills along the famous Needles Highway, Sylvan Lake is framed by dramatic, towering granite rock formations that rise straight out of the water. Its small, pristine sandy beach offers excellent swimming, paddleboarding, and kayaking in a setting that feels entirely separated from the surrounding plains. Often considered the “crown jewel” of Custer State Park, the lake serves as a trailhead for several popular hikes, including the Sunday Gulch Trail. It provides scenery and outdoor recreation unlike any other inland state destination.
