31. Colorado: Medano Creek Beach
This highly unique, seasonal beach appears every spring as snowmelt flows from the Sangre de Cristo Mountains right past the base of America’s tallest sand dunes. The creek features a rare phenomenon known as “surge flow,” where underwater sand ridges build and break, sending rhythmic wave pulses down the stream. For a few short weeks in late May and June, visitors can skimboard, ride inner tubes, build sandcastles, and splash in the shallow water with a backdrop of both desert dunes and snow-capped alpine peaks.
