46. Mississippi: Ship Island
Located 12 miles off the mainland coast, Ship Island is accessible only by a scenic passenger ferry ride from Gulfport. Because it sits far out in the Gulf, it offers significantly clearer water and more pristine white sands than the mainland Mississippi beaches. The island is intentionally uncommercialized, offering visitors a quiet, natural beach day with excellent shelling and swimming. History buffs can also explore the remarkably well-preserved Fort Massachusetts, a brick fortification dating back to the Civil War era.
